FDA to Review Cancer Reports Related to Crohn's Drugs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will look into reports of cancer cases in pediatric and young adult patients who took TNF-blockers, commonly prescribed to Crohn's disease patients and others with autoimmune diseases. This investigation has come about in response to 30 claims over 10 years from cancer in patients taking these drugs, for which prescribing information contains such warnings.  "As in adults, cases of cancer have been reported in children exposed to anti-TNF agents.  Many of the patients in these cases were also on other immunosuppressants that are associated with cancer," says Uma Mahadevan-Velayos M.D., Chair of Patient Education for the Foundation. "This is not a new risk, rather the FDA is looking at the rates of this complication in children exposed to anti-TNF medications."
